Acknowledgment

Harris Fields State School acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands from across Queensland and pay our respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the state.

Before the arrival of Europeans the area was inhabited by Aboriginal people and the Logan City area was at the intersection of two major language groups, the Yugumbeh and the Jaggera.

European settlement saw the Woodridge area become a place where migrants came to live. It was settled in the early 1900s by Russian and European immigrants who engaged in poultry farming. After both world wars Woodridge became home to many new Australians from Europe who arrived in Australia in post war schemes. In the late sixties English migrants lived in the area and in later times Asian migrants and Pacific Islanders made their homes here.

Harris Fields State School opened in January 1975 and was called Smith Road State School. The school was built on land which had been a poultry farm owned by a Russian immigrant, Mr Rogoff.  A farmer, Mr Harris took over the poultry farm and lived and worked there until the property was sold to build the present school. The school was originally called Smith Road State School but not long after the school opened the school’s name was changed to Harris Fields State School.  Many years ago Smith Road was called Harris Road after the Harris family who lived in the area.

Today, our school is a wonderful mix of cultures of students from many parts of the world with a dominance of Pacific Islanders and an increasing number of African refugees. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students add another cultural dimension to make our school vibrant and exciting and bring a range of talents and skills to enrich our community.
